Eduardo Arolas – La Cachila, tango arranged by John Mason

Woodwind Quintet (Flute, Oboe, Clarinet in Bb , Horn in F, Bassoon)

Advanced level; Duration 3 minutes

Arolas, known as ‘the Tiger of the Bandoneón’, was one of the first great tango orchestra leaders. His La Cachila (‘The Pipit’) was so popular that many other bands of the Golden Age of tango made their own highly characteristic arrangements. This edition draws on several of the versions from the 1920s, 30s and 40s, including passages where ‘yumba’ technique (where bandoneóns are stretched to full capacity while the piano articulates in clustered notes) are emulated in the winds. Enjoy…. and dance!
