Ernesto Nazareth – Dengoso (maxixe tango) arranged by John Mason

Woodwind Quintet (Flute, Oboe, Clarinet in Bb , Horn in F, Bassoon)

Advanced level; Duration 3’45”

As South American dance music spread to the entertainment halls of Europe and the USA in the early part of the twentieth century, Ernesto Nazareth’s Dengoso (1907), was one of the most popular numbers. This Brazilian maxixe tango has more in common with the Ragtime or the Milonga (tango criollo) than the more languorous Argentinian tango popular today. Its syncopated two-step rhythm and frenetic concluding flute variation is great fun to play and sure to rouse any audience.
